Structural cracks come from stress: ground that shifts under the shell, settling that concentrates load on one corner, and the accumulated wear of decades. Hillside pools and older shells see more of it, but any pool can develop a crack given enough seasons.
Reading a crack before repairing it
A crack carries information in its shape. Fine, random, interconnected lines across the plaster are crazing, a finish issue rather than a structural one. A single defined crack running down a wall, radiating from a corner, or following the tile line deserves respect and a dye test. Width matters too: a crack that opens and closes with the seasons is telling you the ground underneath is still moving, and rust staining along a crack line suggests water has been traveling through the shell long enough to reach the steel inside it. None of that reading replaces testing, but it decides where the testing starts and what repair will actually hold.
