Why skimmers crack
The reason is structural, not bad luck. The skimmer is the throat at the waterline that pulls surface water into the filtration system, and it’s anchored to two separate structures at once: the pool shell on one side and the deck on the other. Those two structures move independently every time the ground shifts, and the skimmer is caught in the middle, absorbing that stress season after season until something cracks. It’s a design reality of pools, not a sign yours was built wrong.
Freezes pile on. Water trapped in the skimmer throat expands as it turns to ice, and a winter with a hard freeze or two can finish a crack that ground movement started. That’s why skimmer leaks so often announce themselves in spring, right when the pool comes back into use.

A dye test confirms the leak in minutes, and then the fix is matched to the damage. Minor cracks in the throat or body take epoxy or sealant repairs. What a replacement actually involves
When the body is truly gone, replacement is the honest answer, and it’s a more contained job than most owners fear.
