About Spa & Hot Tub Leak Detection

Technician testing an in-ground spa for leaks

Spa leak detection is its own discipline. A spa packs more jets, more fittings, and tighter plumbing loops into a few feet of shell than the entire rest of the pool, and many spas add a blower line, a dedicated heater loop, and a spillway connection on top of that. Every one of those is a potential failure point, and they sit close enough together that guessing is useless.

The telltale sign is a spa that drops overnight while the pool holds steady. Because the two share equipment but not plumbing, a difference in their behavior points straight at the spa side, and it narrows the search before any testing begins.

Why circuit isolation matters

A spa with six jets and a clean-looking shell can still be bleeding water through a single fitting three inches below the waterline. Testing the whole spa as one system would only tell you a leak exists. So each circuit gets isolated and proven on its own: jets, suction, spillway, and blower lines individually, then dye testing at every shell penetration and a check of the heater loop at the equipment pad. One leaking jet can’t hide behind five dry ones.

The spillway complication

Pool-attached spas add one more wrinkle. A raised spa is supposed to hold its elevated water level after the system shuts down, with a check valve keeping the water from sliding back downhill toward the pool. When that valve wears out, the spa drains itself every night in a way that looks exactly like a plumbing leak. Part of an honest spa detection is separating true leaks from equipment behavior like this, because a worn check valve and a cracked jet fitting are completely different repairs at completely different prices, and you should only pay for the one you actually have.

Most spa leaks turn up at jets, fittings, and heater unions, and most of those are repaired the same day they are found. We focus on in-ground and pool-attached spas. For portable hot tubs we can sometimes help with plumbing leaks, but we don’t service shells or electronics, and we’ll tell you honestly on the phone whether your situation is one we can help with.

Our Process

How It Works

From the first phone call to your final walkthrough, here’s exactly what working with Austin Pool Leak Repair looks like.

  1. Compare pool and spa behavior

How the two bodies of water lose (or hold) level tells us which side of the system owns the problem.

  2. Isolate every circuit

Jets, suction, spillway, and blower lines are each tested alone until the leaking run is proven.

  3. Pinpoint and quote

Dye testing and listening equipment mark the exact spot, and you get a repair price on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about testing, timing, repairs, and what to expect. If your question isn’t here, call us and we’ll talk it through.

Call (737) 265-1943
01 Why does my spa lose water overnight but my pool stays full?

Because they share equipment, not plumbing. When the system shuts down for the night, water in the spa’s dedicated lines can drain back through a leak while the pool’s lines stay tight. An overnight drop on the spa side is one of the most reliable clues in leak detection.

02 My spa only leaks when the jets are running. What does that mean?

That points to a pressure-side leak. Some failures only open up when the pump pushes water through them, which is why we test circuits under pressure instead of just watching a still spa.

03 Do you work on portable or above-ground hot tubs?

Our focus is in-ground and pool-attached spas. On portable hot tubs we can sometimes track down plumbing leaks, but we don’t repair shells or electronics.

04 Can a spa leak be fixed the same day it’s found?

Often, yes. Leaks at jets, fittings, and heater unions are typically same-day repairs. Failures buried deeper in the spa’s plumbing take more planning, and you’ll get the price and timeline before anything starts.
