Pressure Testing

Pressure testing is the plumbing lie detector of the pool world. Each line is plugged, isolated from the rest of the system, and put under controlled pressure. A sound pipe holds its pressure. A leaking pipe can’t. There is no interpretation involved, which is what makes it the definitive test: every line ends the session either proven tight or proven leaking.

What “each line” actually means

A typical pool has more separate plumbing runs than most owners realize. The skimmer feeds the pump through one line, the main drain through another, the cleaner may have its own dedicated run, and the returns carry filtered water back to the pool. Add a spa and you add jet, suction, and spillway circuits on top. Tested together, six lines produce one useless answer: a leak exists somewhere. Tested one at a time, they produce the answer that matters: this line right here owns the problem, and the other five are innocent.

That per-line certainty is the difference between a targeted repair and a guessing expedition, and it’s why isolation is worth the extra setup. Every plug and every gauge reading eliminates something, and in leak detection, elimination is progress.

When to order a pressure test

• Unexplained water loss where the shell and fittings have tested clean
• Before a remodel or new deck pour, so you never bury a leak under fresh concrete
• After a plumbing repair, to prove the fix held before the job is closed
• When buying a home with a pool and you want the plumbing’s condition on record

Testing runs at controlled pressures appropriate for pool plumbing, well within what the pipes handle every day the pump runs. It also doubles as our own quality check: repaired lines go back under pressure before we call any job finished, held to the same standard that found the leak.
